How Bikram Yoga Became a Lifelong Practice: A Conversation with Esak Garcia

There are certain wellness practices that begin as a solution to a problem but eventually become a way of life. For me, Bikram Yoga became exactly that.


In this episode of Wellness Marketing 101, I sat down with longtime Bikram Yoga teacher, yoga asana world champion, and educator Esak Garcia to discuss the deeper meaning behind the practice and why so many people stay committed to it for decades.

What started as a conversation about hot yoga quickly evolved into a discussion about discipline, entrepreneurship, mindset, spirituality, healing, and self-awareness.


My Introduction to Bikram Yoga


I first discovered Bikram Yoga in 2011 while I was working on my PhD and struggling with anxiety and panic attacks.


At the time, I didn’t know the difference between Bikram Yoga and hot yoga. I simply found a studio in Center City Philadelphia and decided to try a class after my mom encouraged me to explore yoga instead of relying solely on traditional gym workouts.


At first, the heat felt overwhelming. But after about a week of practicing consistently, I noticed something important:


The hotter the room became, the less mental space I had to focus on stress, anxiety, and everything happening outside the room.


For the first time in a long time, I felt fully present. Not to mention the physical benefits, which you have to experience for yourself to understand :)


Years later, Bikram Yoga continues to help me navigate entrepreneurship, teaching, motherhood, and life with greater clarity and resilience.


What Makes Bikram Yoga Different?


According to Esak Garcia, the heat is not simply there to make the workout harder. It serves a much deeper purpose.


“The heat pulls you into the present moment,” he explained during the episode.


Bikram Yoga consists of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises practiced in a heated room. While many people initially come for physical benefits such as flexibility, strength, recovery, or injury prevention, Esak emphasized that the practice ultimately becomes much more mental and spiritual than physical.


One of the most fascinating parts of our conversation was discussing how physically fit athletes often struggle in their first Bikram Yoga class.


Why?


Because the challenge is not just physical endurance. It is the ability to stay calm, aware, and mentally present under discomfort.


Flexibility Is Not a Requirement


One of the most common misconceptions about yoga is that you need to already be flexible to begin practicing.


As someone who grew up swimming competitively and playing sports, flexibility was never my strength. However, consistency over time created mobility and range of motion that traditional athletic training never provided.


Esak explained that yoga is ultimately about awareness and technique rather than forcing the body into positions.


“What’s dangerous is forcefulness, not the posture itself,” he shared.


That perspective is especially important in a culture that often glorifies pushing beyond limits without listening to the body.


Entrepreneurship, Discipline, and Self-Awareness


One of the strongest parallels we explored was the connection between yoga and entrepreneurship.


Many Bikram Yoga practitioners tend to be highly driven, type-A personalities who struggle with slowing down or backing off when needed.


Learning when to pause, modify, recover, or simply breathe through discomfort becomes part of the practice.


And honestly, the same applies to business. As entrepreneurs, we often believe that constant pushing equals success. But self-awareness and self-control are what allow us to sustain long-term growth without burnout.


That mindset shift is one of the biggest lessons yoga has taught me.


Yoga Asana Competition and Healthy Competition


Esak also shared his experience as a yoga asana world champion and discussed the mindset behind yoga competition.


While some people believe yoga and competition should not coexist, Esak described competition as an exploration of personal potential rather than defeating others. Having competed at the regional level, I completely agree! It is about the journey.


“You’re not competing against other people. You’re exploring your own potential,” he explained.


His perspective highlighted how healthy competition can inspire growth, discipline, and self-mastery when approached from the right mindset.


Why Bikram Yoga Becomes a Lifestyle


One theme that repeatedly came up during our conversation was that Bikram Yoga often evolves into a lifelong lifestyle practice.


Many practitioners initially arrive seeking physical transformation or stress relief, but over time they stay because of the mental clarity, emotional resilience, and sense of connection the practice creates.


As Esak explained, once the practice becomes integrated into your life, it is difficult to imagine living without it.


I completely understand that feeling.
