In episode 30 of the Wellness Marketing 101 podcast, I had the joy of interviewing one of my students, Michael Golkow, a marketing major and entrepreneur who’s been on an inspiring and unconventional journey.

Michael’s story is one of resilience, risk-taking, and reinvention. From exploring psychology and holistic health to launching creative brands, selling art, and training in MMA, he’s proof that there’s no single “right” path to success.

From Psychology Student to Creative Entrepreneur

Michael started college studying psychology because he was fascinated by how the mind works and wanted to help people find holistic ways to feel better. But life had other plans. After facing personal challenges and health setbacks, he decided to take time off from school to re-evaluate his path.

That break became the turning point that led him to entrepreneurship.

He began by experimenting with social media raffles, growing a Facebook community of thousands and an Instagram following, all organically. From there, he discovered a passion for niche online markets and creative collaborations, particularly with glass artists and independent makers.

Turning Passion Into a Purpose-Driven Brand

One of Michael’s early partnerships was with a company called Mood Max, which recycled old wetsuits into yoga mats, transforming environmental waste into meaningful art. That experience opened his eyes to the potential of purpose-driven business and sustainability.

Over time, he built his own lifestyle brand, creating limited-edition art drops and apparel collaborations with independent artists, all while managing every aspect himself, from design to marketing to fulfillment.

“You can sell anything as long as you have passion for it,” he shared.“If you truly love what you do, people will feel that energy and want to support you.”

Lessons From MMA: Discipline, Focus, and Growth

Michael’s journey also led him to mixed martial arts, where he trained and competed in California. Through the sport, he developed a deep sense of discipline and resilience — traits that later shaped his approach to business.

“MMA taught me that life has high highs and low lows,” he said.“You win some, you lose some but the key is to keep showing up.”

That mindset carried over into entrepreneurship. When his small business grew, he realized the value of patience, routine, and self-belief, qualities that often make or break a founder’s success.

The Power of Authentic Marketing

Without formal marketing training at first, Michael built his audience organically through authenticity and storytelling. He learned to listen to his customers and adapt to their interests — for example, creating a Day of the Dead-inspired collection that resonated with his largely Hispanic audience in Southern California.

His advice to other entrepreneurs?

“Be genuine. Build real connections. Your story is your strategy.”

Returning to Drexel and Redefining Success

After several years running his business, Michael decided to return to Drexel University to complete his marketing degree and is now graduating cum laude while preparing for law school.

He credits his non-linear journey with giving him perspective and maturity:

“Some people find direction right away. Others take time. But the key is to keep moving forward, stay adaptable, and never lose your curiosity.

Key Takeaways for Entrepreneurs

Michael’s story is a beautiful reminder that entrepreneurship is not a straight line. It is a series of experiments, lessons, and leaps of faith.

Here are a few takeaways from our conversation:

  1. There’s no one right path. Success can come from detours, not just direction.

  2. Passion sells. If you believe in your product, others will too.

  3. Be adaptable. Pivoting is part of the process — not a sign of failure.

  4. Authenticity is marketing gold. Your journey is your brand.

  5. Take care of yourself. Discipline and balance fuel creativity.
