If you’re a small business owner trying to figure out how to grow your brand, one of the biggest challenges is knowing where to start. Marketing, operations, customer relationships, community building, it can feel overwhelming.
In this episode of Wellness Marketing 101, I sat down with entrepreneur and community builder Suzette Melendez, founder of Suzette LC and a key contributor to Alchemize Fightwear, to talk about how businesses can grow sustainably through strategy, community, and authentic relationships.
Suzette shared insights from her experience working with small businesses, organizing events, supporting athletes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and helping entrepreneurs build systems that allow their businesses to scale.
Here are some of the biggest lessons from our conversation.
From Office Management to Community Builder
Suzette’s journey into entrepreneurship wasn’t a straight line.
She initially joined Alchemize Fightwear in an administrative role, helping with office management and assisting the founder with day-to-day tasks. Over time, she began taking on additional responsibilities, including:
Event planning
Customer service
Order fulfillment
Athlete relations
Community building
As she gained exposure to different parts of the business, Suzette realized she loved understanding how businesses function behind the scenes.
Instead of limiting herself to one role, she embraced the opportunity to learn everything she could about how a business operates.
Her curiosity eventually led her to start helping other entrepreneurs implement better systems and organizational strategies.
Why Small Businesses Need Strategy (Not Just Ideas)
One of the most important topics we discussed was strategy.
Many entrepreneurs start their businesses with a great idea, but without a clear plan for growth. Suzette explained that this is where many businesses struggle.
A successful business needs more than passion, it needs structure.
This includes creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which are step-by-step processes that help businesses operate efficiently and consistently.
SOPs help entrepreneurs:
Save time
Reduce confusion
Delegate tasks more easily
Maintain consistency as they grow
Without these systems in place, business owners often find themselves overwhelmed by day-to-day operations.
Community Is the Heart of Every Successful Brand
One theme came up repeatedly during our conversation: community.
Suzette believes every successful business should stay rooted in its community. That means understanding the people your business serves and building real relationships with them.
Rather than focusing only on selling a product, businesses should ask questions like:
Who are our customers?
What challenges do they face?
How can we support them beyond our product or service?
When brands build genuine relationships with their customers, those customers often become loyal advocates.
This relationship-first mindset is one of the reasons Alchemize Fightwear has developed such a strong following within the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community.
Building Authentic Relationships Instead of Transactional Partnerships
Suzette also shared how she approaches partnerships with athletes.
Instead of treating these partnerships as transactional sponsorships, she focuses on building authentic relationships.
Her process begins with conversation.
She wants to understand who the athlete is, what motivates them, and what their goals are, not just how they can promote a brand.
If the relationship is built on shared values and mutual respect, the partnership naturally becomes stronger and more meaningful.
This philosophy applies to entrepreneurs as well. Businesses that focus only on transactions often struggle to create lasting customer loyalty.
But when relationships come first, customers are far more likely to stay connected to the brand.
Supporting Women in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Another important part of Suzette’s work involves supporting women in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a sport that is still largely male-dominated.
Many women who begin training experience challenges such as:
Feeling intimidated as the only woman in a class
Struggling to find training partners
Lack of gear designed specifically for women
Brands like Alchemize Fightwear are helping address these issues by creating gear designed for women and organizing events that foster connection and support.
Through these events, many women have built friendships and training networks that extend far beyond the gym.
Community plays a powerful role in making sports like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu more accessible and welcoming.
Helping Couples Plan Stress-Free Weddings
In addition to supporting small businesses, Suzette also helps couples plan small, intimate weddings through her business Suzette LC.
Many couples today prefer smaller weddings but still find the planning process overwhelming.
Suzette specializes in stepping in as a day-of coordinator, helping with tasks such as:
Organizing vendors
Managing timelines
Coordinating setup
Handling communication with family and vendors
Her goal is simple: allow the couple to enjoy their wedding day without worrying about logistics.
This service is especially valuable for couples who plan their own weddings but want someone to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Advice for Small Business Owners
When entrepreneurs reach out to Suzette for help, the first question she asks is simple:
“Explain your product to me.”
If a business owner cannot clearly explain what they do and why it matters, it becomes difficult to build a strategy around it.
She also encourages entrepreneurs to stay deeply connected to their communities and always listen to their customers.
Some of her key advice includes:
• Believe in the product you’re selling
• Build relationships before focusing on sales
• Stay connected to your community
• Create systems that allow your business to grow
When businesses combine passion, structure, and authentic relationships, they create a foundation for long-term success.
