The Real Life of a Mompreneur: Learning to Adapt, Breathe, and Let Go of Perfection

Hello, amazing entrepreneurs! I’m Boryana — marketing professor, mom of three, and founder of Black Sea Advanced Marketing Solutions, where we help health and wellness businesses build authentic, heart-centered marketing foundations.

If you’ve ever tried to balance building a business and raising a family, today’s post is the reminder you might need.

The last week of summer break for my kids taught me a major lesson about adapting, letting go of perfection, and giving myself grace. And if you’re a mom entrepreneur, a working parent, or someone juggling a full-time job plus a business, this story will resonate with you. This is what I share in Episode 39 of the Wellness Marketing 101 podcast, right in the midst of the holiday madness.

When Schedules Shift Overnight

My husband is an elementary school teacher. What I didn’t realize? He was going back to school a full week before our kids.

So suddenly, a perfectly planned week turned upside down.

  • I had podcast guests scheduled.

  • I had work planned for my courses at Drexel.

  • And I had three kids at home with me.

I spent time planning… only to have to undo and reschedule everything.

The Reality of Working With Kids at Home

Let’s be honest: Yes, we can work with our kids around, but it’s hard and often frustrating and inefficient.

Everything takes longer. Recording podcast episodes? Nearly impossible.

If the door is open, they walk in. If the door is closed, they knock, bang, and yell “Mommy!”If they’re watching something, they still hear me talking and come find me.

And that’s OK. It just means we need to adapt.

Adapting Your Routine (Even When You Don’t Want To)

Two days before the chaos started, I had to reset my expectations:

✔ Reschedule podcasts

✔ Cancel meetings

✔ Accept that productivity would look very different

I personally don’t like working late at night. But that week, I had to.

And I was exhausted by Friday.

Then came the surprise:The kids’ first week of school was a half day every day — meaning another week of rearranging everything. Yes, the school told us the week before!

Entrepreneurship requires planning. Motherhood requires flexibility. Doing both at once requires a whole different mindset.

A Powerful Mindset Shift for Mom Entrepreneurs

I reminded myself:

1. Breathe.

Sometimes productivity is slower — and that’s OK.

2. Not everything needs to be done right now.

Your tasks will still be there tomorrow.

3. Seasons of life shift — your workflow can shift too.

4. Ask for help unapologetically.

My in-laws saved me that week.

5. Enjoy the moments you won’t get back.

It was the end of August. Beautiful weather. My girls were starting school soon.I needed the reminder to slow down and enjoy it.

Balancing Work and Family Isn’t About Doing It All

During my PhD program, one of my professors said:

“Getting your PhD is like trying to take a sip from a fire hose.”

That’s exactly how life feels sometimes as a working mom and entrepreneur.

You don’t catch all the water. You catch a sip where you can, and you keep going.

Motherhood, entrepreneurship, teaching — all of it can feel like a fire hose. But when we focus on the few drops we can catch each day, things fall into place.

Give Yourself Grace

If you’re in a season of chaos — I see you.

Remember:

  • You don’t need to get everything done.

  • You can take it one day at a time.

  • You’re allowed to rest.

  • You’re allowed to adapt.

  • You’re allowed to put yourself first sometimes.

For me, that means working out, or simply having 30 quiet minutes to myself at night. Those moments matter more than we think.

Everything will work out the way it’s supposed to.
