Why Local Food Tastes Better: Community, Trust, and Wellness with Small World Seafood

Updated: Feb 9

When we talk about wellness, we often focus on movement, mindset, or nutrition—but rarely do we talk about where our food comes from and who we get it from. In this episode of the Wellness Marketing 101 podcast, I sat down with Robert Amar, founder of Small World Seafood, to explore how food, community, and trust intersect—and why local food truly tastes better.

As both a marketer and a customer of Small World Seafood, this conversation felt especially meaningful.

From Fine Dining to Neighborhood Seafood

Robert’s background is rooted in the restaurant world. After studying psychology and neurobiology at McGill University, he spent decades working in fine dining—from Montreal to Key West to Philadelphia—helping open and shape some of the city’s early modern restaurants.

Food was never just about what was on the plate. It was about experience, connection, and shared moments.

That philosophy stayed with him as he transitioned from restaurants into seafood distribution, working closely with chefs who wanted more than just a supplier—they wanted knowledge, quality, and trust.

The COVID Pivot That Changed Everything

When restaurants shut down in March 2020, Robert—like many small business owners—was forced to pivot overnight. With seafood still available but grocery stores in chaos, he sent a simple email to his neighbors offering fresh fish.

No marketing plan.No website. No fancy systems.

Just a truck, good seafood, and a willingness to help.

What happened next was unexpected: neighbors told friends, friends told family, and within weeks, Small World Seafood became a community-driven business serving hundreds—and eventually thousands—of customers.

The Three Questions That Built the Business

Robert realized that most people had the same three questions about seafood:

  1. Where do I get my seafood?

  2. What should I be eating right now?

  3. What do I do with it?

Small World Seafood was built to answer all three.

It’s not just about selling fish—it’s about education, seasonality, and confidence in the kitchen. Robert explains what’s fresh, why it’s available, and how to cook it without intimidation.

As he puts it:

“If the fish is good, you don’t need to do much. Salt, pepper, olive oil, 425 degrees—done.”

Why Hyper-Local Beats Hyper-Scale

In an era where many food companies rush to ship nationwide, Robert made a conscious decision not to scale that way.

Instead, he doubled down on being hyper-local.

Why ship seafood across the country when there are millions of people right in Philadelphia?

Why sacrifice quality, affordability, and connection for growth that distances you from your customer?

This mindset challenges traditional business thinking—but it’s also why Small World Seafood has built extraordinary loyalty and trust.

The Power of Relationships in Business

One of the most powerful themes in this conversation is relationship-based marketing.

Customers aren’t just email addresses—they’re neighbors. Kids come to pick up fish. Families share photos of meals. Customers send postcards from fish markets around the world.

Small World Seafood’s emails have open rates most brands can only dream of—not because of tricks or funnels, but because people genuinely want to read them.

As a marketing professor, this is exactly what I teach my students:

People don’t buy from brands. They buy from people they trust.

Wellness, Food, and Belonging

Wellness isn’t just about what you eat—it’s about how you feel when you’re part of something.

Knowing your food sourceFeeling welcomedBeing rememberedBeing trusted

That sense of belonging makes food taste better. It makes the experience richer. And it’s something that’s often missing from modern consumer culture.
